About Eleanor Tanno, MD

Dr. Eleanor Tanno is a practicing board-certified family physician and the founder of Advance Directive MD. During her time working in the hospital, Dr. Tanno saw many critically ill patients whose families were unprepared to make informed medical decisions on their behalf. She found that patients who had an Advance Directive to serve as a roadmap for their care greatly improved their family’s experience, and thus, Dr. Tanno became became passionate about encouraging everyone to have an Advance Directive.

Specifically, Dr. Tanno feels physicians and caregivers are the ideal contacts to provide their expertise and guide conversations regarding patient medical wishes. This has inspired her to teach provider-specific courses on Advance Directives, as well as create an online course for partners of The Washington Home.

Originally from Washington, DC, Dr. Tanno is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She has been named a Top Doctor by Washingtonian magazine for five consecutive years, and shares her expertise on Advance Directives through speaking engagements, published articles, and as a guest on media outlets. She also sees patients full time at a private medical practice in Rockville, Maryland, where she is a partner.
